Hire and Train Seasonal Employees Early
If you own a retail business, this time of year can be especially busy. In fact, the months of November and December typically account for as much as 30% of a retailer’s annual sales. That means increased inventory and a need for more employees, which in turn means a need for more security.
If you’re choosing to hire seasonal employees, be sure you allow enough time to vet them fully. It may be tempting to bring seasonal employees on quickly and without a thorough interview or background check with the justification that they won’t be around for long, but we recommend against this. You should always conduct a background check, no matter how long the employee will be associated with your company, so we recommend leaving plenty of time to do this before they begin work.
Additionally, you should evaluate each employee’s level of experience before assigning them specific tasks. If possible, we suggest pairing newer employees with some of the more experienced employees until they can perform the job on their own.
This not only ensures that employees are acting as they should around customers, but it also helps them to understand the rules and regulations of your business more clearly, hopefully decreasing the chances of accident or theft.
Don’t Post Your Holiday Hours
Rather than posting your updated holiday hours on the windows outside your business or on Google, we recommend encouraging people to call for holiday hours. Similarly, you could also implement an automated email response across your business that encourages each person to call for holiday hours.
By having your holiday hours on your door, you’re letting ill-intentioned individuals know exactly when you’ll be away from your business, which leaves you vulnerable. If you only give this information out to select people, you’re more likely to stay protected from intruders.
Always Make Sure Your Business Is Locked and Armed
The holidays can be hectic. After a long day or work, there’s nothing more tempting than curling up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and watching a festive movie. However, before you do any of that, you should always ensure that all doors and windows are properly locked and secured, and that your alarm system is armed.
If you’re going to be leaving your business for an extended period of time during the holidays, we recommend going around to every exterior door and window and ensuring they are completely secure.
If you have an access control system, be sure that any possible schedules to automatically open doors on specific days and times are overridden while you’re away, ensuring that your business is never left unlocked and unattended.
Ensure Decorations Don’t Get in the Way of Security
While decking your entire business out in holiday decor can be magical, be sure that the decorations you’re adding to your business don’t obstruct security systems. Be sure that decorations aren’t hanging in the way of your security cameras, especially if they are being placed outside and are subject to elements like wind and snow. Additionally, make sure that all decorations are away from the motion detector, as this could cause a false alarm if the decorations fall out of place.
Be Careful When Disposing of Trash
An influx of customers means an influx of inventory, which also means lots more boxes to recycle. While we encourage recycling your cardboard, we want you to be aware of the parts you’re throwing out. Shipping labels often contain not only your name and business address, but also often contain information about the original contents, which is like an advertisement for burglars.
We recommend taking all shipping labels off of boxes and shredding them, then cutting boxes up so that no one would be able to tell what the contents were before you toss them.
Check All Lights, Including Holiday Lights
If you’ve chosen to decorate the outside of your business this holiday season, be sure to double-check that all wiring and cords are functioning properly and that they are not in the way of any entrances or exits.
Additionally, be sure that the inside and outside of your business is well-lit, especially if you’ll be away for a while. Installing motion lights can be a great deterrent for any possible intruders. Lighting makes it much more difficult for intruders to hide as well.
You may consider putting lights on a timer that turns on and off at random, which will help give the appearance that people are still inside your business, even when it’s closed.
Test All of Your Security Equipment
Security systems can be a great way to check on your business while you’re away — if everything is functioning as it should. If you’re planning to close your business for an extended period of time, be sure to test all alarms, including fire, carbon monoxide, security cameras, access control systems, and more so you know they’re all working correctly.
We recommend doing this as soon as possible, so you’ll have plenty of time to accommodate for any necessary repairs. Our experienced team can provide you with high-quality, efficient repairs.
